CARE INSTRUCTIONS

LIGHT:  String of Bananas needs bright light to grow well and maintain healthy, plump leaves. Outdoors, it thrives in full sun to bright partial shade. Indoors, place in the brightest window available — ideally south- or west-facing. In lower light, the banana-shaped leaves become elongated and spaced further apart on the stem, and the plant loses its full, cascading character. A grow light works well for supplementing indoor light.

WATER:  Water deeply and allow the soil to dry completely before watering again — this is critical. String of Bananas is highly susceptible to overwatering and root rot. In summer, water every 10–14 days; in winter, reduce to once a month or less. Shriveled or soft leaves indicate thirst; mushy or yellowing leaves and stems near the soil indicate overwatering.

SOIL & POT:  Use a cactus and succulent potting mix with added perlite for maximum drainage. Hanging baskets with coco coir liners work beautifully and allow excellent airflow and drainage. If using a solid pot, ensure it has drainage holes. Avoid deep pots — the roots stay shallow and excess soil depth holds moisture that can rot the stems.

SEASONAL TIPS:  String of Bananas grows most actively in spring and summer. In late fall or winter, it may bloom indoors — producing small, white, cinnamon-scented flowers. Reduce watering significantly in winter when growth slows. Outdoors, bring containers inside before temperatures drop below 40°F. Trim any leggy or bare stems in spring to encourage fresh growth from the base.

PROPAGATION
Among the easiest succulents to propagate. Lay stem cuttings on top of dry succulent mix or place cut ends just at the soil surface. Roots develop quickly. Long hanging stems can be looped back into the pot to create a fuller, denser plant. Propagate in spring or summer for fastest results.

HOW THIS PLANT GROWS
Senecio radicans produces long, trailing strings of small, curved, banana-shaped leaves on slender stems that can reach 2–3 feet or more. It is a fast grower in good light and cascades beautifully from hanging baskets, high shelves, or wall planters. The banana-like leaves have a translucent ‘window’ along the top that allows light to penetrate — a fascinating adaptation to bright, high-altitude environments.

GROW JOYFULLY
String of Bananas is pure trailing joy — fast, forgiving (as long as you don’t overwater), and endlessly fun to watch grow. Find it a sunny spot, let it hang, and water it almost never. It will do the rest.
