CARE INSTRUCTIONS
LIGHT: Begonia maculata thrives in bright, indirect light. A few feet back from an east- or west-facing window is ideal. Avoid direct sun, which scorches the leaves. Too little light causes the plant to become leggy and reduces the vibrancy of the spots.
WATER: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. This begonia dislikes both overwatering and sitting in water — always empty the saucer after watering. Its cane-like stems store some moisture, so err on the side of underwatering if unsure.
SOIL & POT: Use a well-draining, lightweight potting mix. Adding perlite improves drainage. Choose a pot with drainage holes; terracotta works well because it breathes. Begonia maculata prefers being slightly root-bound and doesn't need a large pot.
HUMIDITY: This plant loves humidity. If your home is dry, place it near a pebble tray with water or use a small humidifier nearby. Avoid misting directly on the leaves, which can encourage powdery mildew.
SEASONAL TIPS: Growth slows in winter — reduce watering slightly and hold off on fertilizing until spring. Pinch stem tips to encourage bushier growth and prevent legginess. Wipe leaves occasionally to keep them clean and glossy.
HOW THIS PLANT GROWS
Begonia maculata grows upright on bamboo-like canes, producing large, wing-shaped leaves with bold white polka dots on top and deep burgundy-red undersides. It produces clusters of white or pale pink flowers — a beautiful bonus for an already striking plant.
GROW JOYFULLY
The polka dot begonia is one of those plants that stops people mid-conversation. Give it bright light, let it dry a little between waterings, and it will reward you with bold, graphic leaves and unexpected blooms.
